The Oil of Anointing

Psalm 23:5:  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.  You anoint my head with oil….

Luke 7:44-47:  Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman?  I came into your house.  You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair….  You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.  Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much.  But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”  

DQ 1) What does it mean for the Good Shepherd to anoint your head 

            with oil?

2)  A Sacred Anointing 

Exodus 30:25-30:  Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer.  It will be the sacred anointing oil.  Then use it to anoint the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony, the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand.  You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy.  Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. 

1 Samuel 16:12-13:  Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.”   So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power.  

DQ 2) What did the Old Testament anointing oil symbolize?

3)  Anointed For Healing

Mark 6:7, 12-13:  Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits….  They went out and preached that people should repent.  They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. 

James 5:14-16:  Is any one of you sick?  He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up.  If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.  Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.  

DQ 3) Why are Christians instructed to anoint with oil when praying for 

            healing?

4)  The Holy Anointing 

Luke 11:13:  “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

1 John 2:20:  But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.

5)  Brimming Over

Psalm 23:5:  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.  You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

2 Chronicles 16:9:  For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

Ephesians 3:20-21:  Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!  Amen.
