DIVINE CONTENTMENT

Primary Text: Philippians 3:7-14, 4:10-13                                                July 25 & 26, 2026

1)  In the World

Philippians 4:11-13 (CSB):  I don’t say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself … In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need.  I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.

1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NASB):  Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share … so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

Matthew 6:19-21 (AMP):  Do not store up for yourselves [material] treasures on earth … But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven … for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also.

DQ 1) Are you content in your present circumstances?

2)  Wants, Desires, Needs

1 Timothy 6:6-9 (CSB):  But godliness with contentment is great gain …  If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.  But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction.

Psalm 34:8-10 (NASB):  Taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!  Fear the Lord, you His saints; For to those who fear Him there is no lack of anything … they who seek the Lord will not lack any good thing.

Psalm 37:4 (CSB):  Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires.

DQ 2) What distinguishes a “want” from a “need”?

DQ 3) What are the desires of your heart?

3)   Striving

Ecclesiastes 1:14 (NASB):  I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is futility and striving after wind.

Ecclesiastes 2:11 (CSB):  When I considered all that I had accomplished and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be futile and … nothing to be gained under the sun.

DQ 4) Are you currently striving for or after something?

4)  To Know Him

Philippians 3:7-14 (CSB):  But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss … in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord    My goal is to know Him … Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus … But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.

DQ 5) What are your life goals?  How are you pursuing them?

5)  To Glorify Him

Isaiah 43:6-7 (NASB):  … Bring … Everyone who is called by My Name, Whom I have created for My glory … whom I have made.

Colossians 1:16 (CSB):  For everything was created by Him … all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Matthew 5:16 (CSB):  … let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (CSB):  So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

DQ 6) How can we glorify God in everything we do?
