Wisdom Gifts of the Spirit
June 1 & 2, 2024Primary Text: 1 Corinthians 12:8
Previous Teaching: Spoken Gifts of the Spirit
1) Tongues
1 Corinthians 14:2, 4-5: For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit…. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.
1 Corinthians 14:14–15: For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
DQ 1) What are possible benefits of speaking in tongues to an individual and the church?

2) Interpretation
1 Corinthians 14:13, 18-19: For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says…. I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
DQ 2) What is the purpose of interpretation of tongues?

Proverbs 4:5–7: Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:6: Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
2 Peter 1:20–21: Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
DQ 4) Define prophecy. How can prophecy build up the church?
DQ 5) What are characteristics of false prophecies?
DQ 6) What are dangers associated with false prophecies?
