The Spirit of Holiness

Primary Text: 1 Corinthians 6:18-20      March 16 & 17, 2024

This Week’s Teaching:

1)  Spirit of Sonship

Romans 8:13-16:  For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.  For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

DQ 1) What does it mean to be a son (or daughter) of God?

DQ 2) How does the Holy Spirit ‘testify’ that “we are God’s children”?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2)  The Temple

1 Corinthians 6:18-20:  Flee from sexual immorality.  All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body.

DQ 3) What are various facets of Christians being a “temple of the Holy Spirit”?

3)  Grieving the Spirit

Ephesians 4:29-32:  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

DQ 4) How do Christians grieve the Holy Spirit?

DQ 5) Are you grieving the Holy Spirit in your current life?

4)  Quenching the Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (NIV, 1984):  Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt.  Test everything. Hold on to the good.  Avoid every kind of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (NASB, 1995):  Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances.  But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.

DQ 6) How can an individual quench the Spirit?

DQ 7) How do churches quench the Spirit?

5)  The Spirit of Freedom

2 Corinthians 3:17-18:  Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

DQ 8) What is genuine, godly freedom?

DQ 9) How does the Holy Spirit impart true freedom?

DQ 10) In what ways do you still need to find freedom?
