March 9 & 10, 2024

Primary Text: 1 Corinthians 2:9-13

Last Week’s Teaching:  The Spirit of Prophecy

1)  From The Father And The Son

John 15:26:  “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”

DQ 1) Why is it important to recognize that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son?

2)  Who Spoke Through The Prophets

2 Peter 1:20-21:  Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation.  For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 3:16-17:  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Revelation 19:10:  Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

DQ 2) Why is understanding the role of the Holy Spirit central to understanding the inspired nature of the Scriptures?

This Week’s Teaching:

1)  The Prophetic Spirit

Micah 3:7-8:  “The seers will be ashamed and the diviners disgraced.  They will all cover their faces because there is no answer from God.”  But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his sin.

Acts 2:16-18:  No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.  Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.  Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.”

DQ 1) How can we distinguish true prophets (and prophecies) from false soothsayers (and lies)?

2)  The Teaching Spirit

John 14:16-17:  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--the Spirit of truth.

Acts 1:1-2:  In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

1 Corinthains 2:9-13:  However, as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”—but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.  The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.  For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.  We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.  This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

DQ 2) In what ways does the Holy Spirit instruct and teach each believer?

3)  The Spirit of Guidance

John 16:13:  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

Romans 8:13-14:  For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Galatians 5:16-18:  So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.

DQ 3) How does the Holy Spirit guide those in whom He dwells?

DQ 4) How has the Holy Spirit guided you during your Christian life?
